What is an infrared sauna?

At our Melbourne facility, we have both an infrared sauna and a traditional sauna and they look similar and have the same basic function – to produce heat that causes you to sweat. Unlike the traditional sauna, however, the heat of an infrared sauna is produced by infrared light panels, rather than steam and penetrates deeper. This electromagnetic energy first heats your body before heating the surrounding air, unlike traditional saunas that heat the air first before heating your body.

Infrared saunas also operate at a lower temperature than traditional saunas, about 60o C, compared with up to 90o C for traditional saunas. The lack of steam and the lower temperature of infrared saunas makes them more comfortable for many people. Many of our clients in Melbourne feel that the dry heat of the infrared sauna penetrates their body more deeply than traditional saunas, whilst the lower temperature allows them to experience a more intense sweat.

How does an infrared sauna work?

Traditional saunas use convection and conduction to warm your body, whilst infrared saunas use radiation emitted by infrared light emitters. This light is absorbed by your skin, increasing your temperature, initiating your body’s natural cooling system and causing you to sweat. With no humidity or steam, you experience a much miler and dryer session than with traditional saunas.

The temperature of infrared saunas is cooler than traditional saunas because the focus is on heating your body rather than heating the air in the room. For people who are sensitive to humidity or heat, an infrared sauna is a much more comfortable experience that produces the same result – intense sweating.

Infrared saunas, however, are designed to penetrate deeper into the skin and raise your core temperature, whereas traditional saunas just heat the superficial layers. That’s because you can change the wavelength of the light waves (far infrared, mid-infrared and infrared) to achieve the effect you need. Far infrared is the wavelength that raises your core temperature and most readily simulates the effect of a traditional sauna.

What are the benefits of an infrared sauna?

An infrared sauna has many benefits for people of all ages and physical conditions. For example, a 2015 study found that infrared saunas help reduce muscle soreness and assist the recovery of your neuromuscular system following intense strength and endurance training sessions. It’s also proven to reduce blood pressure, relieve joint pain, increase muscle mass and decrease inflammation, and increase flexibility and range of motion.

Overall, the regular use of an infrared sauna (also known as dry sauna bathing) has many potential health effects. Most notably, you’ll notice better cardiovascular health, improved strength, performance and endurance, as well as a faster recovery from intense exercise, training or competition. .

How can a traditional sauna improve health and performance?

Many of our clients in Melbourne rave about the effects of our infrared sauna on their recovery, endurance and performance. That’s because these saunas directly raise your core temperature which stimulates your body’s natural cooling response. This, in turn, redirects more blood to your skin (to cool you down) and you begin to sweat (again to cool your down). The benefit of this additional flow of blood to your skin is that it lowers your blood pressure which is good for heart health.

The infrared light also warms your muscles which promotes greater flexibility and range of motion, whilst relaxing your muscles and reducing pain. Sweating is also a great way to remove toxins from your body, so the more you sweat in the infrared sauna, the more you detoxify your body and remove any potential contaminants.

Overall, regular use of an infrared sauna helps your recovery and enhances your athletic performance. It’s a great way to end your training sessions at the end of a long hard day.

Are infrared saunas better than traditional saunas?

In general, infrared saunas are just as beneficial as traditional saunas because they offer similar benefits. Many athletes, however, believe that the deeper penetration of infrared waves helps them to recover faster. It all comes down to personal preference because some people prefer dry cool heat rather than intensely hot and humid heat. Other people don’t feel as if they have benefited from a sauna unless they sweat excessively, so they opt for the traditional sauna.

Whatever your thoughts, we know that infrared saunas stimulate your body’s natural cooling response, resulting in increased circulation to your skin and excessive sweating. Whether that’s achieved via hot and humid heat or cool and dry heat is up to you!

What is the difference between an Infrared sauna and a Traditional sauna?
An Infrared sauna heats your body directly by using infrared lamps where the light is transmitted to penetrate below the skins surface. This directly raises your core temperature, forcing your body to eliminate the build-up of toxins found deeper within the body. This creates more of a deep detoxification as well as all the many more benefits!
A traditional sauna on the other hand heats the air around you by creating steam, which then forces the body to sweat with the hot/humid air.
So, the heat in both saunas is completely different! An infrared sauna will produce a much drier heat as apposed to a traditional sauna.

What should I wear in an infrared sauna?
Most people wear their bathers or a pair of shorts during their session.
It’s super important though that whatever you wear, you bring a towel to sit on!

Can I bring a friend to my session?
Absolutely! Our Infrared Sauna fits up to 3 people at an extra $10 per head.
